350 kilometers (218 miles) south-southeast of Madrid at around 6:47 p.m. local time (12:47 p.m. ET), a 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck the southeastern Spanish city of Lorca and it has killed 8 people. One of the deaths occurred in a building collapse in Lorca, state-run EFE said. 80,000 residents were so scared of the incident and slept outside.

Debris of collapse buildings were seen in the pictures. Even the belfry of an old church collapsing after the quake was seen smashing the nearby parking cars. Buildings were also spotted with broken windows. It has also been reported that a nearby hospital was evacuated as a precaution.

One of the press office worker who was in the vicinity describe the incident to have caused a strange sensation. His location was about 60 kilometers (37 miles) from Lorca and he also added that the shaking’s duration was from five to eight seconds.

This horrible incident happened at the same time with the election campaign for Spain’s 8,000 town mayors and most of its regional governments. They suspended their campaign as of the moment to pay respect to the victims of the calamity.

The last time an earthquake was felt in the country was way back March 29, 1954 hitting Dúrcal, Granada. It caused property damage at Malaga but didn’t cause death just like what happened now. The quake at that time was felt at Madrid, Granada and Cadiz.
